Our People

Education is a partnership between the people in our community; students, staff, parents/caregivers and the Board of Trustees.

School Objectives

1.   Curriculum Delivery

Teachers will plan and implement programmes that provide all students with opportunities to achieve successfully in all the learning areas and develop the key competencies in accordance with the New Zealand Curriculum document.

2.   Curriculum Content

Programmes will be balanced and appropriate to the learning needs of individual students, with priority given to student achievement in literacy and mathematics. Rich learning experiences will be provided for our students in line with the intentions of our local curriculum.

3.   Student Progress and Assessment

Every student will have his/her development monitored and assessed on an individual basis in order to base teaching on the identified needs of the learner. School-wide assessment will be carried out to measure the overall effectiveness of programmes.

4.  Treaty of Waitangi

In accordance with our Treaty of Waitangi Policy all staff will provide a programme that meets the needs of all students and gives recognition to the needs of our Maori learners. The school acknowledges the importance of te reo and evidence of this can be found in all classes. In order to further support the teaching and use of the te reo the school is currently involved in the ‘Newlands Te Reo Maori me Tikanga NLC’, aimed at increasing teacher confidence and subsequently increasing student engagement and participation by maori and all students in their learning.

5.  Cultural Diversity

The cultural heritage of all students will be acknowledged and aspects of the cultures represented incorporated into our school programmes.

6.  Environmental Education

All students will be provided with opportunities to be actively engaged in maintaining and improving the quality of the environment

7.  Personnel

A system of governance and management based on professional trust, teamwork and effective communication will be maintained between the Board and staff and appropriate ongoing staff development to be provided for all members of staff.

8.   Finance

Through careful management of available funds, the Board allocates funds to reflect the school’s priorities as indicated in the strategic plan and in accordance with the learning needs of the students.

9.  Property

The Board will maintain the school in order to ensure a safe and healthy teaching and learning environment.

10.   Community

The school will promote an open partnership of consultation and involvement with students, parents/caregivers, staff and community. A welcoming environment will be created.

11.   Self Review

The Board will monitor the effectiveness and efficiency of its programmes and systems to ensure the needs of the school community are met.
